Thomas Beeching

Thomas Beeching was born on 24th May 1767 in the Kentish town of Smarden. At the age of 22, Thomas arrived in Tonbridge to set up a linen draper's shop in Church Lane. He speedily established himself locally as a trusted advisor and many a country shopkeeper brought his savings to Mr Beeching knowing that they would be safe - Thomas Beeching was at heart a Banker. By 1815 he was issuing his own notes and by 1824 the draper's shop had been reconstructed and was exclusively devoted to being a bank. Thomas's sons expanded the banking business to Tunbridge Wells, Hastings, St Leonards and Folkestone when it was sold to Lloyds Bank Ltd
